While many would define an artist as someone with the ability to draw, middle school art teacher, Jess Loyd, would argue there is so much more to art than drawing. Discover how she helps students move beyond this mindset and the fear of drawing while laying the groundwork for a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
Visual Arts
Students study visual arts with a dedicated art teacher from preschool through 8th grade. They are introduced to a variety of techniques and mediums, including architectural design, drawing, three dimensional artwork, ceramics, collage, mixed media, printmaking, painting, fiber arts and glass fusing. Each division has a dedicated art studio with a wide variety of materials and resources for exploration and creativity, including five pottery wheels, a clay kiln, two glass kilns, a slab roller, and a clay extruder.

Jill Hunt
Art Teacher (Kindergarten – 5th Grade)
Fine Arts Department Co-Chair
B.S. in Education from Indiana University
M.S. in Education from Indiana University South Bend
Mrs. Hunt has taught at Stanley Clark for more than 20 years. Her students’ artwork has been recognized for excellence in regional, state, and local art competitions and they have participated in global art exchanges with other students in Kenya, Australia, and Syria. Her work was selected to appear downtown as part of South Bend’s Festival of Banners 2015.
Jess Loyd
Art Teacher (Preschool and 6th-8th Grade)
B.A. in Studio Arts, Education from Saint Mary's College
Mrs. Loyd came to Stanley Clark after serving as the Curator of Education at the South Bend Museum of Art for 13 years and teaching ceramics for 16 years at SBMA. She has continued her education through awarded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Maine, Glen Arbor Art Association and Alfred University Summer Ceramic Arts. Her work has been included in the Indiana Governor's Show and she is a member of the Indiana Women's Caucus for Art.
